(I hesitate to post this - not least because I will be talking about a Photoshop plug-in that I haven't yet fully tested. But it seems relevant to some discussions going on at the moment. And time might be important as regards people taking any action.)
For the record … I have no personal interest in promoting this panel other than to, hopefully, help you with luminosity masks.

Download Our Free Luminosity Mask Actions. Another way to easily create the Luminosity Masks for each image is by using Photoshop Actions. By signing up for our newsletter, you'll receive a free download of our Luminosity Mask Actions for Photoshop so you don't have to do this yourself or spend money on an advanced panel. The download includes. Click the Edit Mask button on the layer. Select the Luminosity Mask option from the drop-down. A new mask is created based upon the brightness of the image. If the mask is showing unwanted areas, you can click on the Edit Mask button and choose Brush. Now you can use the Mask menu to invert the mask or use the Brush tool to add or subtract from.

Several people have commented that they don't understand luminosity masks, and need to get their head round them. Steven has specifically asked for help on this.

If we accept that luminosity masks are a ‘good thing', then - to me - what folk need is:
  • an easy way to generate them
  • an easy way to see if they are doing what they want as regards selecting parts of an image.
Various panels and plug-ins are available on line and - again to me – a very useful and easy-to-use-one is Ian's luminosity panel:

At £5.99 this is a good starting point.

However, in the last few days a new plug-in has become available (at significantly more cost = $24.99 US or about £20 in the UK. This is the price for the next 5 days – or until another offer is made ) - which seems genuinely to be a ‘next generation' iteration:
  • Lumi 32 https://www.shutterevolve.com/lumi32-powerful-32-bit-luminosity-mask-plugin/

I bought this on Friday (two days ago) and have used it only once (hence a significant reason for my hesitation in posting):
But I found it easy to use and it seems to do what the video says as regards tailoring luminosity selections to what you want. (HOWEVER, I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HEAR FROM OTHERS ON THIS.):
Colour version

B&W version
This is a light painting image made up from about 12 blended images. I tried using the Lumi 32 panel but also used Ian's Luminosity Panel to paint in some selections. (The ‘painting-in/out' bit of Ian's LM panel I find is particularly useful.) If it is relevant, I processed it in colour and then made minimal changes to the B&W version.
What I liked about Lumi 32 is:

  • 32 bit thingies (but I haven't done a comparative test)
  • The ability to see straight away, without having to do anything, which bits (the white bits) of a mask are ‘selecting'. (Yes, I guess that you can do this in Photoshop/DXO but - offhand - I don't know how.)
  • Being able to fine tune (addressing Steven's query??) the selections
This is probably enough for people to take in so I will stop here (ie I can't think of anything else relevant to say at the moment. )

TK7 Panel for Photoshop

The TK7 panel is the newest release of the comprehensive panel for making luminosity masks and running Photoshop. It's now had two major updates. One in September 2019 and again in July 2020. Like its predecessor, the TK7 panel is modular, so users can configure it in whatever manner works best in their workspace. The Combo/Cx module even has two different arrangements to allow a new compact layout if that's desired. (Sean Bagshaw has a video at the bottom of this page that shows how to do this.) TK panels are used worldwide and come pre-programmed with six common languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Chinese. Users can choose the language they prefer. The TK7 panel works equally well on Mac and Windows computers and installs in Photoshop CC 2014 through Photoshop 2020.

Wimoweh 1 1 68 kg. The main feature of the TK7 panel is its ability to make pixel-based masks, like luminosity masks. But luminosity masks are really just the beginning. TK7 also makes masks based on color channels, hue (Infinity Color masks), saturation, vibrance, and even the user's own alpha channels. The latest update has the new 'Go' module for doing this. It's demonstrated in the video below. The Go module displays masks at near real-time speeds, and it has a dedicated 16-bit workflow to ensure the best possible masks from creation through deployment.

My blog has lots more information on using this panel. Be sure to subscribe to get the latest updates. There are also additional videos at the bottom of this page that show various features of the panel and provide information on previous updates.
